Caribe Resort – Lazy River
Caribe Resorts is a leading resort destination on the Alabama Gulf Coast. Offering beautiful luxury condos with water front views, featuring over 40,000 square feet of pools, slides, a pool-side deli, a five star restaurant, multiple state of the art fitness centers, tennis courts, jet ski rental and parasailing, and a luxurious Lazy River.
The Lazy River is made of stainless steel which is very smooth and slippery under water. To reduce the chance of guests slipping as they enter the lazy river they were searching for a coating for the entrance areas. The challenge was to find a coating that would adhere to stainless steel which was submerged in moving, chlorinated, salt water. The Lazy River was in constant use until the end of the tourist season in late October when afternoon thunderstorms were a near daily occurrence. Being on the roof, there was no protection from the rain, giving very little time for the coating to cure. To further complicate matters, the coating application window, due to a high relative humidity, was a very short time, between the dewpoint temperature and afternoon thunderstorms. Everything was working against the coating application, stainless steel, chlorine salt water, water movement and foot traffic, no solvents requirement, slippery at entrances, only closed in fall and winter rainy season. Also the close proximity to other pools and luxury condos meant that the coating also had to be as vapor and odor free as possible.
VOC-free, odor-free, Castagra Ecodur 201 was practically the only coating material possible for this application. The Castagra Ecodur coating has an adhesion rate that surpasses every industry standard for coating adhesion, allowing it to stick to the stainless steel with minimal prep work required. The stainless entrances were given a light profile with hand grinders with wire cup brushes, and then wiped down with alcohol just prior to the application to remove any moisture due to the high dew point temperature. Castagra Ecodur is typically applied on clean, dry, prepped surfaces at a minimum of 4 degrees F above the dew point.
Additional features of the Castagra Ecodur that made it the coating of choice for this application are its’ very high chemical resistance, to withstand the chlorinated salt water, its’ natural texture does not become slippery when wet as epoxies and urethanes do, its’ lack of any strong chemical vapors or odors, and very fast spray application and rapid cure rate allowing it to be applied and fully cured before any rain showers could compromise the application.
Application of the Castagra Ecodur began at around 11 am, when the temperature had risen above the dew point, and was completed in a mere three hours. The application was finished about an hour and a half before the first rain shower of the afternoon. Fortunately with its’ very rapid cure rate, it was cured enough to walk on and take water in 10 minutes after it was sprayed on. This scenario would have spelled disaster for a traditional coating.
The client was thrilled with the odorless feature of the Castagra Ecodur, which did not disturb the guests that were enjoying the other resort amenities close by. They reported overall satisfaction that a potential liability was eliminated from the resort, in such a quick, efficient and cost effective manner.
There were also no solvent disposal issues as solvents are not contained in Castagra Ecodur, nor used in its application or clean-up of equipment.
