Cayman Grill, Orange Beach, AL
Cayman Grill is an exciting, new, waterfront restaurant in Orange Beach, Alabama featuring fresh seafood, steaks and Caribbean flavors. It has a luxurious, open atmosphere with a large waterfront dining deck that includes a 21,500 gallon tank filled with cownose rays for the enjoyment of the diners.
They needed a coating to seal and waterproof the inside of a filter return tank where the rays would be housed. They needed a coating with no VOC or chemicals that would affect the marine life, one that would waterproof and seal the fiberglass return tank, and be maintenance free in the future, to avoid having to drain the tank to clean algae and barnacles from the tank walls. They needed a coating that would adhere to fiberglass in a submerged, salt water environment as any coating which peeled or flaked off the tank could be harmful to the rays.
VOC-free, odor-free, Castagra Ecodur 201S was chosen as the coating for the tank. It has proven very effective in past applications involving saltwater environments. With no VOCs used in its’ manufacture or application, there is absolutely nothing to affect the marine life. Ecodur 201S has an adhesion rate that exceeds all industry standards for coatings so there was no concern about flaking or peeling getting into the water. One advantage that helped make the Ecodur the hands down choice for this situation was that the natural algicide in the “hot sauce” or accelerator, used in the coating inhibits the growth of any algae or other organisms on the coating surface.
We were able to spray the tank in about an hour. Due to the rapid curing of the Ecodur 201 the contractor was able to begin installing the tank immediately after we finished the coating. Two advantages that were observed by the owner were that, with the flexibility that Ecodur has after curing, the tank could be transported and installed without the fear of the coating being cracked due to being bumped or twisted, as would be a concern for an epoxy coating, and the lack of odor even during the application process.
The client reported overall satisfaction that the tank was coated quickly and cured rapidly enough to begin installation immediately. He had no worries about the coating affecting his large investment, or future costs that would be necessary to drain and clean the tank due to growth on the coating surface. There were also no solvent disposal issues as solvents are not contained in Ecodur, nor used in its application or clean-up of equipment.
